    Director returns are different

A director’s return isn’t a standard employee return. Salary from your own company, dividends against the allowance and tax bands, possibly rental income or side work on top — getting the mix reported correctly is exactly the sort of thing that goes wrong in DIY filings.

We prepare and file self assessment returns for directors all year round. If we already act for your company, your figures are on file and your return is prepared from records we know are right. If we don’t, we’ll collect what’s needed with a simple checklist. Not sure you even need to file? Our self assessment service starts with confirming that for free.

    How it works

Three steps to a filed return

    1. Tell us your situation

A quick conversation about your income. We’ll confirm whether you need to file at all, register you with HMRC if needed, and quote any standalone work up front.

    2. We prepare your return

Salary, dividends and every other income source compiled and reported correctly. If we do your company accounts, most of it is already on file.

    3. You approve, we file

You see the return and the tax due before anything is submitted. We file with HMRC and confirm, well ahead of the 31 January deadline.

    Payments on account

If HMRC requires payments on account we’ll explain what’s due, when, and why — no surprise bills in July.

    Tax planning built in

Because we see your whole picture, we’ll flag where next year’s salary and dividend mix could work harder for you.

    HMRC correspondence

As your registered agent we deal with HMRC on your behalf — notices, queries and the January scramble included.

    Questions

    Director self assessment FAQs

Do all company directors have to file a self assessment return?
Not automatically. If HMRC has sent you a notice to file, you must. Beyond that it depends on your income: dividends above the allowance, untaxed income or higher-rate liabilities usually mean a return is needed. Tell us your situation and we’ll confirm whether you need one — and register you if you do.
How do I register for self assessment as a director?
You register with HMRC and receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) before you can file. We handle the registration for you — it’s included in our monthly company service, and we do it as part of any standalone return engagement if you’re not yet registered.
    What’s the deadline?
Online returns are due by 31 January following the end of the tax year, along with any tax owed. Register well before that: HMRC has to issue your UTR first. We’ll keep you ahead of every date.
What does a director tax return service cost?
One-off director returns are individually quoted: we review your situation — dividends, rental income, gains, anything else — and agree a fixed price up front before any work starts. If we act for your limited company, one director’s self assessment and your registration are already included in the £159+VAT monthly fee at no extra charge. See full pricing →
What information do you need from me?
Typically your salary and dividends from the company (which we already have if we do your company accounts), plus any other income — rental, interest, other employments, pensions or capital gains. We’ll give you a simple checklist.
